Lot's Wife X @Matcha_Meredith (working title) is a multimedia, audience-interactive theatrical work set inside a women's reeducation camp where two true believers labor to retrain their prisoner into the perfect trad wife influencer. Each character is playing for points. What begins as an absurdist game darkens quickly when one of the believers starts to glimpse what is actually happening behind the screen. The piece draws on the moral weight of Eugenia Ginzburg's gulag memoir Into the Whirlwind and Anna Akhmatova's poem Lot's Wife while holding a real time funhouse mirror up to influencer culture, trad wife aesthetics, and the spectacle of the public’s complicity in the destruction of their own human rights. It is wacky, unsettling, theatrical and urgently of this moment.
After three workshops and an internal showing, we are bringing a working draft to the O’Neill Center for a week-long workshop with a choreographer to continue to flesh out the piece, before a project public sharing in 2027.
